Dr. Stephen Gapps has dedicated years to researching and writing about the Australian Frontier Wars, bringing to light the conflicts that have shaped this nation’s past. His works, including The Sydney Wars: Conflict in the Early Colony 1788–1817Gudyarra: The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance about the Bathurst War of 1822–1824, and his latest book, Uprising, explore the complexities of violence, warfare, and resistance on the frontier between 1838 and 1844.

In this conversation with local historian Sarah Swift, he will reflect on the challenges of uncovering and writing about histories of conflict, the responsibilities of non-Indigenous historians in truth-telling, and the importance of working alongside First Nations knowledge holders to ensure these stories are told with accuracy, respect, and integrity. Join us for an insightful discussion on confronting difficult pasts and the role of allies in shaping a more truthful national narrative.
