State of the Art: The Novel

Join esteemed novelists Rumaan Alam, Robbie Arnott, Samantha Harvey and Torrey Peters as they discuss the state of the novel with host ABC Radio National’s Kate Evans (The Bookshelf).

Robbie Arnott 

Robbie Arnott is the author of Dusk, Limberlost, The Rain Heron and Flames. He’s won and been shortlisted for a wide range of literary awards. He lives in Hobart. 

Rumaan Alam 

Rumaan Alam is the author of The New York Times–bestselling novel Leave the World Behind, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and adapted into a major motion picture, as well as two other novels. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker and elsewhere. His latest novel is Entitlement. He lives in Brooklyn. 

Samantha Harvey 

Samantha Harvey is the author of The Wilderness, All Is Song, Dear Thief and The Western Wind. She appeared on the longlists for the Bailey’s Prize and the Man Booker, and the shortlists of the James Tait Black Award, the Orange Prize, the Guardian First Book Award and the Walter Scott Prize. The Wilderness won the Betty Trask Award in 2009. She is a tutor on the MA course in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. 

Torrey Peters 

Torrey Peters is the author of the novel Detransition, Baby, which won the 2021 PEN/Hemingway award for debut fiction and was named a Best Book of the Century by The New York Times. Her second book, Stag Dance, is out now.
