Celebrating the culture and creativity of the LGBTQIA+ community one true story at a time, Festival favourite Queerstories has played to crowds big and small, from Mudgee to Murwillumbah, Albury to Adelaide, Brisbane and beyond. Featuring Daniel Nour, Torrey Peters and more.

Daniel Nour 

Daniel Nour is an award-winning Egyptian-­Australian writer and journalist. His work explores the intersection of queer and migrant experiences and has featured in The New York Times, the ABC, Meanjin, Kill Your Darlings, Mascara Literary Review, The Big Issue and Eureka Street. His debut memoir, How to Dodge Flying Sandals (Affirm Press), is set for release in May 2025. 

Hasib Hourani 

Hasib Hourani is a Lebanese-Palestinian writer, editor, arts worker and educator living on unceded Wangal Country. His debut book, rock flight, was released with Giramondo in 2024. 

Maeve Marsden 

Maeve Marsden is a writer, theatremaker and the Creative Director of Varuna the National Writers’ House and the Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival. She is best known for producing Queerstories, a national storytelling project that has brought more than 500 LGBTQIA+ writers to stages around the country for the last ten years. 

Rumaan Alam 

Rumaan Alam is the author of The New York Times–bestselling novel Leave the World Behind, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and adapted into a major motion picture, as well as two other novels. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker and elsewhere. His latest novel is Entitlement. He lives in Brooklyn. 

Torrey Peters 

Torrey Peters is the author of the novel Detransition, Baby, which won the 2021 PEN/Hemingway award for debut fiction and was named a Best Book of the Century by The New York Times. Her second book, Stag Dance, is out now. 

Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts 

Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts is a proud Bundjalung Widubul-Wiabul woman who has degrees in both law and social work and was recognised with an Australian Human Rights Medal in 2019. She is a human rights lawyer and Fulbright Scholar whose current research is focused on unveiling the intersections of human rights, child removal and the implications of forcible removal, ensuring that First Nations child survivors and those impacted are heard, while providing solutions towards ending child removal. In 2024, Vanessa was appointed the inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People Commissioner for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Her memoir is Long Yarn Short (UQP).
